Out with the old and in with the new. Twice a year I review and edit my wardrobe before packing it away until next year to make room for some fresh new fashion faves. I’ve set aside this Saturday afternoon for my bi-annual swap.
These are my tips for a seamless closet cleanup:
1. Don’t rush. Turn up the music. Turn on the lights. Try things on. Make it fun.
2. When removing last season’s wardrobe, sort everything into three groups: Consign/Donate, Repair, and Keep.
3. Looking ahead to Fall 2012, be sure to hang onto anything red, orange or gold, faux fur or leather. You’ll thank me in September!
4. Be sure all your clothing is laundered and in good condition before storing.
5. Do a review of all the spring clothes you’ve held onto from last year. Does everything still fit and look fantastic? If not, don’t be afraid to edit again.
6. Assess what’s missing and make a note of key pieces you want to purchase for the season ahead. For example for Spring 2012, do you have something with stripes, a nude shoe and dress, a cold-shoulder top, wide-leg jeans or bold bottoms? Peplum-style waists are also big for Spring and that’s a trend that’s staying for Fall 2012.
7. With what you have, plan a few go-to outfits, right down to the accessories, to make the mornings ahead a little easier on yourself.
8. Everyone has a different idea when it comes to actually organizing their closet. Some like to do so by colour, or by grouping all pants and jackets together. That parts really up to you. But do ensure your clothes have room to breath and don’t get crumpled. Do you really have time to iron?
9. Repeat these steps with your shoes and boots.
